Literally Literacy!
I created Literally Literacy after volunteering at a Jumpstart “reading day” in December of 2016. Literacy is a global issue that we must actively combat in order to better our society. Literally Literacy is currently a weekly blog with posts every Tuesday, and I work with two other organizations, buildOn and Yellow Boat of Hope, in addition to Jumpstart. Along with weekly blogs, literallyliteracy.com features a “Get Involved” page, where you can donate to/get involved with any of the three causes.
Jumpstart is a national organization that advocates the importance of early education and literacy before children enter kindergarten. Since their creation in 1993, their goal has been to level the playing field, and help every child in America succeed. Jumpstart has impacted over 100,000 kids across the nation, and they currently have programs in 15 different states. In addition to their twice a week afterschool programs, Jumpstart holds events throughout the year, with their national campaign “Read for the Record” coming up on October 19! If you would like to set up a team in your community to read “Quackers” in different preschools or elementary schools, contact me through my website, literallyliteracy.com.
Another organization I work with is buildOn, and their mission is to “break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education.” I first heard about buildOn through their club at my school, and I am committed to helping them once again raise $30,000 to build a school in a third world country. BuildOn has built schools in Nepal, Haiti, Nicaragua, Senegal, Mali, Nepal, Malawi, and Burkina Faso. In addition to building schools in some of the world’s poorest countries, buildOn created service learning programs to help kids living in the toughest neighborhoods across the US. I support buildOn because everyone deserves a chance to educate themselves, so that they may create a better life for themselves and their family.
Yellow Boat of Hope provides yellow school boats and other modes of transportation/structures to help struggling children in the Philippines get to school. Education is a way out of poverty, and Yellow Boat of Hope’s role is to bridge the gap between poverty and education, and fill it with hope. As an Ambassador of Hope, my goal is to raise $10,000 to provide school boats, and plan a visit in January to the Philippines to see communities we have helped. My mother immigrated from the Philippines when she was 21, and she was only able to lift herself out of poverty because she was given the opportunity to further her education, so I would like to help others do the same by helping provide them with a chance at a good education.
If you would like to help with any of these projects, visit my get involved page at literallyliteracy.com, and choose which charity you would like to contribute to.
“The great thing a little lamp can do which the big sun cannot do is to give light at night. It shows no one is superior by size but by purpose. If we cannot do great things, we can do small things in a great way. Little things make a big difference to God.”
Always remember that one child, and one book, can change the world.
