Blue Hostel - Boutique Hotel Rooms at Hostel Prices

Looking for a boutique hotel room in the centre of Rome with hostel prices? Look no further, you've found Blue Hostel. 

Blue Hostel tows that perfect line between affordable prices and luxury stay. 

We stayed for two nights and this is what we thought:

Check-in

We arrived at Termini (the main station in Rome) and found it a quick and painless walk to The Blue Hostel: it takes less than ten minutes and the street is smooth - aka great for rolling suitcases. 

When we reached our street we couldn't see the Blue Hostel! Due to the fact that the building is listed, they can only have a very small sign on the wall. Luckily though, Blue Hostel is perfectly marked on google maps, so once we'd found the correct spot, and knew to look out for a small sign, it was easy to find.

At check-in we met Andrea (the manager) who was absolutely lovely. He gave us lots of useful tips and hints for Rome and made us feel right at home. He also gave us a customised map of Rome. This map was a goldmine - with really authentic Roman restaurants and hot-spots on it.

There was no lift to our room, which we didn't mind, especially as Andrea helped us with our bags, but should be noted for those who can't climb three flights of stairs.  

Our room

The Blue Hostel is housed in a former convent from the 17th century, all rooms feature 18th century wooden ceilings and parquet floors. Each room at Blue Hostel also comes with an en-suite bathroom, free (super fast) wifi, LCD TV, mini-bar and Nespresso machine. 

The mini-bar had cold bottles of Roman water (water from Rome is some of the best water in Italy). The Nespresso machine had coffee from Naples, and also doubled up as a kettle for those that want tea. 



The rooms have air conditioning (not so important for us as we visited in December, but extremely important if you visit in the summer). 

The en-suite bathroom was classy and had some great toiletries: 

Our room was quiet - we didn't hear anyone else for our entire stay (even though they were fully booked). The rooms also back onto a courtyard (as opposed to a road) and we had beautiful flowers on the balcony:

All in all, everything was comfortable and beautiful and we couldn't believe we weren't actually in a boutique hotel!

Location

It's too often the case that beautiful hotels are in rubbish locations or rubbish hotels are in perfect locations. With Blue Hostel we found we were in a beautiful ho(s)tel and in the absolute perfect location! Win-win!

We were less than a 20 minute walk from the Colosseum, it's the absolute perfect place to visit the Colosseum from, and so we did:

Blue Hostel is also less than a 10 minute walk from Termini - this is the main transport hub not just for local Rome transport, but also for transport to the whole of Italy!!

Basically Blue boasts the perfect Rome location.

Is the Blue really a hostel?

You may have noticed (by the long list of boutique and luxury hotels that we stay in), that we are not really hostel people. We find them noisy, chaotic and just not that fun. Why pay for a bad night's sleep when you can pay the same amount (or often cheaper!) for a boutique hotel or an airbnb.

But everything we hate about hostels wasn't found at Blue Hostel:

Quiet: all Blue's rooms overlook a private courtyard - no street noise here! We also didn't hear the other guests - no 3am parties here! 

Private rooms: There are no dorms at Blue, so you don't have to worry about sharing with annoying people.

Boutique decor: no crazy colours or weird interior design here, Blue is classy from its parquet floors to its 18th century ceiling.  

What's the catch, is it really a hotel then?

There are still a few key differences between Blue and a hotel:

24 hour reception: There is no 24 hour reception at Blue, there is a member of staff there from 8am until lunchtime to help you plan your day and again in the afternoon to check people in, but no one there overnight. 

Restaurant: Neither is there a restaurant, aka no breakfast - though there is still an espresso machine. Additionally they gave us a list on arrival of perfect, authentic Italian, restaurants nearby

The price: With prices from 145 Euros per night, this is much, much cheaper than a hotel in the centre of Rome. 

Really, I don't know about you, but I'm more than happy to give up 24 hour reception and a restaurant in return for hostel prices.

Conclusion

All in all, we were very impressed with Blue Hostel, thanks to its beautiful interior design, wonderful service and its ability to give you a good night's sleep, we simply couldn't believe that it was a hostel. 

It's also a perfect mixture of old (fashionable decor, great hosting) and new (fast wifi, excellent coffee machine). 

Add to that the perfect location and you are looking at a perfect stay. We highly recommend it for your trip to Rome.
