A Guide To The Perfect Holiday In Brisbane
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland on the East Coast of Australia, was quite possibly our favourite city in Australia. It's super hip, there's plenty to do and the weather is amazing.
So we've written this guide to help you have the perfect holiday in Brisbane.
Things to do in Brisbane
Ostensibly, it would seem that there is not much to do in Brisbane other than shopping and segway riding. If you scratch the surface though you will find plenty of cool things to do in Brisbane:
Swim at the beach
In the centre of Brisbane is a man-made beach right next to the river. This is the perfect place to cool down in the often 40 degree plus heat.
Like most beaches in Australia, this one is free to swim at. It's so relaxing to swim at this beach looking over at the river and the cityscape. The only thing that would make this scene more perfect is an ice cold beer or a glass of pimms, but don't forget: drinking outside is illegal in Australia
Kayak along the Brisbane river
There are many ways to enjoy the Brisbane river: take a walk beside it, a boat ride on it or cross one of its bridges. Our favourite thing to do here was kayak along it. If it's your first time kayaking, there are a few tour companies in Brisbane offering kayak lessons and guided kayaking tours.
Ride the wheel of Brisbane
It's pretty touristy but still worth it for an awesome view of Brisbane. For those looking to get their bearings of the city this is a definite must.
Visit a flea market
Australia does have the odd flea market or two, and Brisbane has some of the coolest. Check out the quirky clothes and try the tasty food. If you're lucky there might be a band or two playing.
Take a day trip to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
One of our favourite memories in Australia is getting to hold a koala. You can do this at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary - the largest and oldest koala sanctuary.
The koalas are only allowed to be held for about a minute, and you're not allowed to hold them if the koala doesn't want to be held. All proceeds go to looking after the koalas, who are clearly cared for as far as we know, and not drugged (like when you get your photo taken with a tiger) or tortured (like when you ride an elephant).
Accommodation in Brisbane
You'll want to make sure that you are staying close to the Central Business District (CBD) where you can stroll around the malls for excellent shops, cafes and restaurants. Luckily, Brisbane has a variety of accommodations around the city that give you easy access to the best that the city has to offer.
Getting around Brisbane.
There's a great train system that links Brisbane to many small and large Australian cities and is easy to use. For example we visited Ipswich and it was quick, clean and easy.
Once you're actually in Brisbane, most people choose to walk. Brisbane's a relatively small city and can be easily conquered by foot.
For those that can't or don't want to walk there are other options: Blacklane (discount code 624GRVGP for you), Uber and segways (which are super popular for some unknown reason).
Conclusion
So there you have it, our guide to having the perfect holiday in Brisbane. We love this city and we hope you do too! If you have any questions about it, let us know in the comments below or find us on social media!
